But once you discover the joys of extra cargo space, where no gear gets left behind (and no children are crying) and you hit the road with that confidence and stress-free departure, the value of owning one makes a lot of sense. Yakima rocketbox old version series#Quality roof boxes like the SkyBox series from Yakima won’t come cheap. Yakima has been in the roof box game for a long time, so this refinement in style and function comes as no big surprise. The overall look is ultra-aerodynamic but is really designed to reduce drag. Even at high speeds, there was very little wind noise to be had. Quiet on the roadĪgain, I wasn’t sure what a box on my SUV’s roof would sound like on the highway. For everyone else, it’s not a big deal and can sit upright in the garage corner without any problems.įor installation, minimum and maximum crossbar spreads are 24” – 36” and fits Yakima round, square, factory, and aerodynamic bars. Only downside when it’s not installed: where do you put? This box is very fairly big and long at 81-inches small garages may have an issue. Yakima rocketbox old version install#Our vehicle here has factory-provided roof rails so the install was quick, with the box easily sitting on the rails and secured by large clamps. And the looks of the SkyBox 16 are deceiving, weighing only 47 pounds it appears to weight 3 times that, so it’s not heavy for a pair of adults to manage. There is zero assembly and no tools required to get this big boy up top either, so installing and removing it is easy with two adults. Getting into the box is easy, so is the latch system with key. Yakima rocketbox old version plus#The box is designed with internal lid stiffeners for durability and easy open and close, plus it offers dual-sided openings for easy access on either side of the vehicle, which turned out to be handier than we expected. Plus, the tapered design reduces hatch interference while the SuperLatch security ensures the lid is secure to its base. Much of this is courtesy of the box’s 15-inch height, allowing things to be stacked. Not having to strategically jam and Tetris all our gear into the trunk was refreshing - it was nice to have some extra trunk space without needing to leave anything behind. For an overnight camping trip, we managed to reasonably stow a great deal of stuff up there - from sleeping bags to firewood. Photo: Amee ReehalĪside from packing the car’s rear cargo trunk, I wasn’t sure exactly how much extra space I’d get. Limited Lifetime Warranty More space than expected Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite. It appeared to use the smaller grooves rather than the places designed for mounting, and it looks like it can't fit very well (I didn't get a very good look.) And when I looked at something something similar on mine it looks like there would be a lot of overhand at the front - perhaps increasing the chances of problems with wind.Dimensions: L 81.00 in x W 36.00 in x H 15.00 in Then coincidentally, today I saw the same old model of Rocket Box on an old Subaru Legacy. I wondered about drilling extra holes, which Yakima doesn't recommend. She sometimes doesn't cooperate, and I'm worried that might happen more - meaning me lifting 100lb of dog into the Forester too many times and getting frustrated (and weak). After a lot of coaxing she did jump in, but I could see her flinching. I mounted the Rocket Box properly, and set the hatch appropriately, then tried to get Morgan to jump in. It took me a long time to get the dog to jump up into the back with the hatch fully open (the rear deck is pretty high and Morgan thought she was going to hit her head or back). The top of the hatch is now about 9" lower than it was. The problem is that the Yakima round bars can't be moved far enough forward such that the rear hatch can open fully. Because the Forester is small (at least when there's a very large dog), I want to use an old Yakima Rocket Box. I'm taking the Forester on a 2 week road trip starting in a few days. I'd ask this on a Yakima forum or general cargo box forum, but I can't find anywhere appropriate and I know people are active here.
